What is sleepmaxxing?😴

& how better sleep hygiene can improve your life.

February 10, 2025

Are you tired?

According to a recent Gallup poll, 57% of Americans said they would feel better if they got more sleep.

But it may not just be the quantity of sleep they're getting - it could be the quality as well.

There’s a new social media trend called “sleepmaxxing,” where people try all sorts of techniques to improve their sleep quality.

There are over 100 million TikTok posts mentioning sleepmaxxing, so it’s clear that the idea has popular appeal among Gen Z.

Check out what this influencer looks like when she wakes up in the morning:

Sleep specialist Dr. Allie Hare explained the sleepmaxxing trend to Cosmopolitan:

"Sleepmaxxing is (yet another!) health trend in which individuals aim to optimize, or 'max' their sleep by attempting to perfect their pre-bed preparations and sleep environment in order to improve the quality and quantity of their sleep…

This is part of the wider trend of improving physical and mental health and wellbeing in this generation, which is a great thing."

Sleep matters a lot more than many people think.

Research from the American College of Cardiology even suggests that up to 8% of deaths could be attributed to poor sleep quality.

Dr. Nidhi Kumar described America as a country that is “chronically sleep deprived” in a recent interview with CBS News.

Nowadays, people are tracking the quality of their sleep through wearable devices.

These devices can tell you how good your sleep was last night, and it can even track the quality of your sleep over the years.

The term “sleep optimization” has also been used to describe this trend, but I prefer “sleep hygiene.”

When we try to “optimize” or “max” our sleep, we can get so distracted that it makes it harder to fall asleep in the first place!

Sleep hygiene refers to the general practices you have around sleep.

Bad sleep hygiene habits include:

  • using your cellphone or other devices with bright lights in bed 📱

  • consuming caffeine or alcohol shortly before bed 🍺

  • going to sleep & waking up at inconsistent times

The Celestial Seasonings’ Sleepytime Tea Bear has come to represent the Platonic ideal of good sleep to many young Americans.

What can you do to improve your sleep?

There are a few confirmed things that you can do to improve your sleep hygiene and get better sleep:

  • eliminate lights from your bedroom while sleeping 💡

  • put the temperature down — your body sleeps better when it’s cold ❄️

  • stop consuming caffeine as early in the day as possible

  • create a relaxing nighttime routine, like leaving your phone in another room and reading a book in bed 📖

Sleep medicine specialist Dr. Federico Cerrone told Healthline:

“Developing good sleep hygiene takes time and is something you can ease into.”
